Save The Date Cards

Save the date cards are not necessary for every wedding, just for those that will be a bit out of the ordinary.

What is one? It is a small card, about the size of a postcard, that lets guests know when your wedding will be so they can plan ahead.

For instance, if you are having a destination wedding that requires guests to purchase airline tickets or make hotel reservations, you will want to let them know ahead of time that they need to take time off from work, purchase airline tickets, rent a car, and pay for hotel rooms.

Or, maybe your wedding will be on a week day during normal working hours. If that is the case, your guests will need to request time off months in advance in some cases. My son is planning on getting married on a Friday morning this coming spring so he and his fiancee sent out save the date cards in January to let guests know that they need to get the day off from work since most of the guests are at work at 11am on Fridays. Usually the cards are about the size of a postcard and can be sent as postcards or they can be put in envelopes and mailed to guests. They can but do not have to match the invitation stationary but many times they do. You can print your own or have them printed at a local workshop. You can also order them online or from a catalog specializing in wedding invitations.

The card should contain the following information:

SAVE THE DATE

for the wedding celebration of

BRIDE'S NAME (JULIE BRADFORD)

and

GROOM'S NAME (ROB WELCH)

Wedding date (Friday, February 6, 2009)

Time (10:00 AM)

Place (San Diego, California)

Formal invitation to follow

The card you choose can vary from the above example. Your main purpose is to let guests know that an important wedding is coming up and when and where so they can attend.

They should be sent out four to six months in advance so guests have plenty of time to make arrangements. The sooner you send them out, the better it will be. Don't forget to follow up with wedding invitations which get mailed out six to eight weeks prior to the wedding.
