Plain Gold Wedding Band by Juanita Schulze

by Juanita
(San Antonio)

My plain gold wedding band and my engagement ring are pictured above on the red background. My husband did not have much money back then so he picked out the engagement ring he liked and surprised me with it. It is mostly yellow gold but the setting holding the diamond is white gold. The light really put a glare on it in the photo, but it is a pretty ring, just tiny. I really did not care. I was in love with the man, not the jewelry.

When we went to pick out wedding bands, I decided I wanted a plain gold band, like my mother and her mother had. I got a thin yellow gold wedding band and David got a thicker one because he has large hands and a thin band looked silly on his fingers.

A relative of ours had to have a $10,000 engagement ring and her fiance could not afford it so her mother had to loan him the money. What do you think of that? She was engaged to her mother. If you can't afford to pay cash, you cannot afford the ring. Do yourselves a favor and do not go into debt to buy a ring you cannot afford. This will create many problems and you will be in debt because you are not satisfied with what he can afford. Does that sound right to you? There is nothing wrong with a plain gold wedding band if that is what you can afford. You can always upgrade later on, if you want to.

Money is not everything. Yes, it is great to have money and put it in the bank. Don't waste it buying expensive jewelry unless you are loaded. You don't need to keep up with your "friends" who bought their expensive rings on credit. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. Money fights are the number one problem in marriages. Don't let it be that way with you. Start off out of debt. Buy a plain gold wedding band and remember you are in love, not in debt.
