Creative Wedding Ideas

For some interesting and creative wedding ideas that you might want to use for your wedding, let's look at some other countries. Yes, go international for parts of your wedding!

France

Let's start in France. In some French towns, on the wedding day, the groom goes to the bride's home to escort her to the church. They walk together to the church. The town's children go with them, throwing white ribbons all the way. What a photo opportunity.French couples marry under a silk canopy. This keeps away evil spirits. The canopy the couple stands under at their wedding is also used when their babies are baptized.

The most fragrant flowers to be found are used in French weddings, also to keep the evil spirits away.

In the south of France, when guests leave the church after a wedding, they throw coins to the children outside. Nice for the kids!

At French wedding receptions, the newly married couple drink a toast from a silver cup with two handles. This cup is usually a family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation within families.

The wedding cake in France is a pyramid of many small cream-filled puff pastries. This is my favorite of France's creative wedding ideas.

Poland

Creative wedding ideas from Poland include a dollar dance. Guests pay the bride to dance with her. Smart brides wear an apron with pockets to hold all of the cash. Some guests pin cash to the bride's dress. The cash is usually used for the honeymoon.

The parents of the happy couple give them a bread and salt blessing. Bread symbolizes never knowing hunger. Salt means that life can be rough and the couple will go through hard times. Wine is also given so they will never be thirsty. The wine is also a wish for good health and happiness.

Italy

In Italy, the reception is all about the food! Yum. I love Italian food. They serve up a multi-course meal followed by a ton of pastries.

One of the creative wedding ideas from Italy is giving away candy-coated almonds in mesh bags called confetti. This "confetti" is a symbol of fertility. (Here in the United States, we also use candy-coated almonds as wedding favors, but they have nothing to do with fertility.)

Another is they determine how many years of happiness the Italian couple will have together. How? By stomping a glass with their feet during the reception. The happy couple stomp away. The number of pieces of broken glass equals how many happy years they will live together.

Ireland

The people of Ireland believe that you will have good luck in your marriage if you marry on only one day of the year--New Year's Day!

Two creative wedding ideas from Ireland are to sew some Irish lace into the wedding gown and then use it later to make a bonnet for the new baby and the happy couple is given a horseshoe to display in their home on their wedding day.

The Irish use the claddagh ring (which we, here in the United States, use as a friendship ring) as their standard wedding ring. A claddagh ring has a heart, a crown, and hands on it. These symbols stand for love, loyalty, and friendship.

Mexico

Mexico has several creative wedding ideas. The dollar dance, like in Poland, is popular. Here in San Antonio, because of our city's rich Mexican heritage, the dollar dance is popular at weddings as well. I lived in El Paso for 20 years and the dollar dance is very popular there as well. Also, the couple gets wrapped up in a lazo, which is a long rosary. Then the priest blesses them.

The groom gives his bride 13 gold coins called arras. These coins mean that the couple will have a happy and prosperous future.

Mariachi band members are shown playing in the two photos below in San Antonio.

Mariachi bands play during the reception. Again, many weddings here in San Antonio are complete with mariachi music. Guests in Mexico hit and break open pinatas for sweet treats. Who knew they were for more than just children's birthday parties?

Popular Mexican wedding favors for the guests are small almond wedding cakes wrapped in colored tissue paper. Yum!
