Cord Of Three Strands Ceremony

The Cord Of Three Strands Ceremony takes the place of the Unity Candle or the Unity Sand Vase in your Christian wedding.

It represents the beautiful symbolism showing everyone that Jesus Christ is the center of your marriage. It tells the world that there are three people in your union--the bride, the groom, and Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. What a perfect way to start your marriage.

You will need:

A pre-made cord of three strands

Or

A brass ring

A 30" length of purple cord

A 30" length of gold cord

A 30" length of white cord

You can find a pre-made cord at GodsKnot.com.

If you choose to make your own, securely attach three cords to a brass ring prior to your wedding ceremony. Make sure that the gold cord is in the middle. Make a large knot at the bottom of each length of cord and have a rubber band available for the bride to fasten the braid she has made. After the wedding, you can add a gold colored ribbon to tie over the rubber band so it looks beautiful when you display it in your home.

Somewhere during the ceremony, at whatever spot you choose, the groom will hold the brass ring. The bride will braid the three strands together and fasten them with the rubber band. I suggest you practice this several times prior to the ceremony.

During the Cord Of Three Strands Ceremony, while the bride is braiding the strands, the pastor or someone else can read about the meaning of this ceremony to your wedding guests. Many will be unfamiliar with the concept of a Christian marriage. Many will be non-believers. (This opens the door for witnessing to them. They may ask you or a family member why the bride and groom would choose this as part of the ceremony. If they ask you, take the opportunity to invite them over for dinner after the honeymoon and then share your faith with them.) Soft music playing in the background is an optional nice touch.

Sample Cord Of Three Strands Ceremony Reading

"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Solomon wrote these words in Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV).

The purple strand symbolizes the groom. Purple is a symbol of royalty. The groom shows submission to God, the King of kings by allowing God to be the head of the marriage.

The white strand symbolizes the purity of the bride. It also stands for the purity of the bride of Christ, his church. As both the bride and groom have accepted Christ as their Savior and Lord, they are both cleansed by Christ.

The gold strand symbolizes God and his majesty. It also symbolizes the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ as the authority in the marriage relationship of the bride and groom.

Today (bride's name) and (groom's name) are united as one in Christ.
