Photographers typically charge $1000 to $5000 to shoot a wedding. Cheap wedding photographers are needed. Everyone is out to make a buck these days. Unless you are rich, don't pay that much. I am sorry to the photographer friends I have, but that is ridiculous.
The photo below was taken by my husband's friend after our wedding ceremony. From left to right, the bride is yours truly-Juanita, with my mom, Rita Yorgensen, and my dad, Richard Yorgensen at First Church of the Nazarene in El Paso, Texas.
We got two friends who were not part of our wedding party to take all of our photos. The really nice part was that they would not take any money at all. The photos were their wedding gifts to us. Actually, both of our photographers volunteered. As soon as we started planning our wedding, a young mom who attended our church asked me if she could photograph our wedding. She loved taking pictures of everything. Of course I said yes. You can never have enough wedding photos!
Then my husband's friend, a warrant officer who served in the Army with David, also decided he would take photos. His photos were quite exceptional. He was a hardcore hobby photographer who took professional quality photos and who knew how to pose the wedding party after our ceremony.
I bet you know someone who is pretty good with a camera and who loves capturing everything on film or these days on a memory card. I am like that. I love to take photos. Go to that person and ask if he/she would be willing to take photos from start to finish. Offer to pay for the film or memory cards plus a fee, but not anything outrageous. I will bet you that most photography-loving friends will be flattered and will do a much better job at your wedding than any paid professional who does not know you or care about you.
Cheap wedding photographers are out there. If you don't know of anyone personally, ask your family members and friends if they know of someone. Have them contact the amateur shutter-bug and ask if they would be interested. If so, give him/her a call, remembering to offer a fee plus film or memory card. Good hobbyists will be flattered that someone thinks them good enough and they love photography so much that they will be thrilled to feel like they are professionals.
Make sure the people you ask to act as cheap wedding photographers or videographers are considerate and get the shots and video you want.
If you are going to play wedding photographer, remember to be considerate. If you are filming, don't scream your head off because if you do, the microphone will pick it all up and no one will be able to really enjoy your work. Below, is an example of a cool dance video but the annoying photographer (or someone right next to the photographer) screams her head off constantly. Too bad because the bride and groom were just awesome!
